EPIC Sunset Bat Paddle
July 26, 2018 |7 - 10 p.m.
Everyone's favorite, most picturesque, and "quintessentially Austin" summer EPIC outing is back!
On warm summer nights in Austin, hundreds of people gather to see the world's largest urban bat colony emerge from under the Congress Ave. bridge, but the best seats in the house are in small watercraft on the river. Join Hill Country Conservancy's Emerging Professionals in Conservation for a relaxing sunset paddling tour along Lady Bird Lake by kayak or canoe to see the bats.
This year, we have a special treat as Jon Flanders, Ph.D., International Programs Manager at Bat Conservation International, has agreed to join us and educate us on the bats we'll see.
Jon has over a decade of experience working on bat conservation projects in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Central America. He is highly skilled at integrating a wide range of techniques, including molecular analyses, bioacoustics, ecological methods and computer modelling, in order to answer novel questions that are vital in halting the current loss of biodiversity. He regularly works with a range of organizations from small non-profits to government agencies and understands the importance of using science as a basis for long-term planning and decision-making.
BYO snacks and beverages. If you have small bicycle lights or a flashlight, bring that too for visibility after dark.
WEATHER: If this event needs to be cancelled or rescheduled due to rain, we will send an email 12 hours before the event.
Emerging Professionals in Conservation (EPIC) is an outdoors club dedicated to exploring and preserving the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country. We connect with each other and the environment through adventures, educational events, volunteerism, and philanthropy. Activities include camping trips, nature hikes, kayaking, ranch tours, Lunch & Learns with inspiring speakers, trail cleanups, and more.
Membership dues go to support Hill Country Conservancy’s projects in and around Austin, including the Violet Crown Trail. By joining EPIC, you join a network of professionals who care about keeping Austin green, love having fun in nature, and are champions for conservation.
